Associate Studio Programme 10 : Jade Montserrat

We decided to approach the Jade’s studio visit more fluidly than previous studio visits. I took her to the studio spaces to look at everyone’s work, this approach was intended to give Jade the opportunity to inquire about any pieces of work which caught her eye. She took a particular liking to Gem’s practice and the two of them had a fruitful conversation prior to everyone’s arrival at the studio.
I think it would be fair to say that everyone enjoyed Jade’s studio visit and were appreciative of how open she was about her experiences throughout the evening.
Jade shared the influences of her practice, detailing the beginnings of her art career and how she entered the art world. She was forthcoming with the difficulties she’s had being an artist, such as financial difficulties, access to materials and space, and how these factors can impact an artistic practice.
We talked about Jade’s earlier performance pieces which explored her racial identity, and delved into the broader topic of Performance and Live Art, referencing artists such as Marina Abromavich and Adrian Piper to discuss the differences between Performance and Live Art.
Missy and I had the opportunity to present our individual practices and some of the work we’d been making in the studio. We both received insightful perspectives from Jade and the group and were given great feedback on ideas to explore and artists/artworks that might be interesting to have a look at.
Following the end of the studio visit we all expressed how reassuring it was to talk to Jade about the timeline of her art practice and how she has navigated the art world.
ASP 10 and Jade intend to stay in contact, inviting each other and hopefully attending one another’s future exhibitions or events. Ama Ogwo
